Abstract
The purposeful Soviet policy of Russification on the territory of Ukraine in the 1970's and 1980's is considered. The main methods of destroying the Ukrainian identity and changing it to the Soviet one are highlighted. It was established that the Soviet language policy had a significant impact on the identity of ethnic groups. During the 1970's and 1980's, Russification intensified. Based on a detailed analysis of available materials, the methods and principles of linguistic and cultural assimilation have been clarified. The most effective of them were: Russification of the educational sphere, migration policy, interethnic marriages, ideological justification of the common features of Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians, purposeful work of the mass media in the formation of a new type of personality – the «Soviet person» and a new community – the Soviet people. The importance of such research at the current stage has been updated. The consequences of Russification are revealed and the key problems related to the change in the linguistic identity of the population are highlighted. The article details the use of all instruments of denationalization and Russification by the Soviet authorities. It was found that as a result of the Soviet language policy, the number of Ukrainian-language schools decreased, and their disappearance was observed in some cities. At the end of the 1970's and the beginning of the 1980's, a regulatory and legal framework was formed that stimulated the study of the Russian language and the transition of teachers and lecturers to it. The prospect of career growth caused certain categories of the population to abandon the linguistic and cultural traditions of their own people. The influence of migrations on identity change and Russification of society is revealed. The regional features of language policy implementation by the Communist Party leadership are emphasized. The influence of the press and television on Soviet society is highlighted. Based on the analysis of sources, the problem of perception of Soviet reality through television is investigated. It has been established that since the end of the 1960's, television has become a tool of Russification and denationalization of society
