News web-sites as the source for study of counterfeiting in Ukraine

Abstract

Counterfeiting of money made by criminals with the purpose of making illegal profits and deceiving the population dates back to the appearance of the first coin in human history. Of those under the counterfeiting of money occurs in parallel with the development of monetary affairs. Counterfeiting of Ukrainian money began with the appearance of the first credit notes printed in 1917 in Kyiv. In modern scientific historiography is paid a quite sporadicall attention over the issue of counterfeiting money in independent Ukraine. The main trends and features of counterfeiting money in our time are investigated in this paper by analyzing the reports of counterfeit money or their producers according to the news sites in the Internet. The most popular are reports of the common prototypes of counterfeits, as well as statistics related to the number of detected counterfeits in the country. The information agency’s data is often based on official reports of the National Bank of Ukraine or statements by a spokesman of the National Police of Ukraine. The highest concentration of detection of counterfeit money today is recorded in the Western Ukraine and Odessa region. In the process of state counteraction against counterfeiting, there have been unusual cases: attempts to prove the solvency with gambling money when crossing the state border, making money transfers through the services of a logistics company etc. Users of payment terminals and ATMs have not been protected yet from receiving a counterfeit money. Technologically, the most counterfeits are made using inkjet printers, the most popular prototypes for counterfeiters are banknotes of 500 hryvnia and 100 US dollars, meanwhile euro and Russian rubles are losing their appeal. Attempts to pay for goods and services with the souvenir money became common in Ukraine. It is noteworthy that among the information sources we have processed any cases about the detection of the counterfeit coins
