The role of scientific and experimental-research activities of M. O. Tiuleniev for Ukrainian society in the 30’s - 60’s of the 20th century

Abstract

The article describes the activities of the domestic agro ameliorator, the AS of the Ukrainian SSR Corresponding Member, Professor Mykola Oleksandrovych Tiuleniev (1889-1969) at the Ukrainian Scientific-Research Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Land Reclamation during the 30’s - 60’s of the 20th century, as well as results of his experimental-research works in the field of theory, methodology and practice of agro-ameliorative research case were analized. The author used historical-genetic, historical-chronological, problematic, historical-comparative, personological and biographical methods. In addition, methods of systematization and source study criticism were used. It is established that during his work at the USRIHE&LR M. O. Tiuleniev conducted research on soil preparation and cultivation, fertilization of swamp lands (acidic, neutral and alkaline), farming, cultivation of the row and technical crops (including sugar beet), garden and berry crops, sown meadows and pastures, its surface improvement, weed control and the use of fertilizers on mineral soils. The scientist leaded drainage reclamation under the USRHE&LR’ methodical coordination. During 1944-1947, M. O. Tiuleniev headed the Department of Reclamation of the SRI, actively participating in the restoration of the institute support network after the liberation of the occupied territories from the Germans. The scientist carried out scientific guidance on two research subjects: Reclamation and hydrological characteristics of the small rivers of the Ukrainian SSR as a basis for developing the problem of integrated use of the small rivers; Design and calculations of sewer cleaners for shallow drainage system. It is found out that in the 1950’s M. O. Tiuleniev worked on studying the possibilities and prospects of rational use of drained peat soils, first of all, for meadows and pastures to create a strong fodder base. Regarding to the field of mechanization of reclamation works, along with performing of the tasks of construction and cleaning of canals, sprinkling issues in the M. O. Tiuleniev’s work, the mechanization of mole drainage works, which he carried out together with S.I.Rudych, found a solution. The scientist is called a classic of agro-ameliorative research case of the Soviet period
