The largest number of unpublished documents is located in the Central State Archives of the supreme bodies of government and administration, as well as in the departmental archives of ministries, under whose jurisdiction there was a large number of higher education institutions of the III-IV accreditation levels. This is the Ministry of Education and Science, Health, Culture and Tourism. Interesting documents are kept in the state regional archives, archives of Kyiv, Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, and others like that. The information materials of the current archives of public organizations are complemented by: the Central Committee of the trade unions of employees of education and science of Ukraine, the Association of educational institutions of Ukraine of private ownership, etc. The purpose of the article is to provide sources of information for the study of the history of higher education, as well as its current problems, in order to promote the advancement of the Ukrainian high school towards European values. It is found out that the sources found contain voluminous and varied information, the processing of which allows to open the topic at the required level of completeness and reliability
