Abstract
Under Soviet rule, the process of renaming cities became widespread, leading to the loss of historical names. New astionyms often had an artificial and completely uncharacteristic character for Ukrainian lands. The granting of a new name was often associated with a certain personality, which usually had nothing to do with a particular city. This phenomenon could be an integral part of hypertrophied glorification or the creation of a "cult of personality". Since Ukraine gained its independence, a number of renaming processes have been necessary.
