Abstract
The beginning of the scientific and organizational formation of Ukrainian ethnic anthropology is associated with two important scientific and cultural events in the life of Ukrainian society in the second half of the 19th century: firstly, with the "Ethnographic and statistical expedition of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society to the West Russian Territory" 1869-1870 and, secondly, with the activities of the South-Western Department of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society in Kiev in 1873-1876. Pavlo Chubynskyi was the initiator, organizer and active participant of both events. Around him united associates – outstanding Ukrainian scientists, writers, public figures (V. Antonovich, М. Drahomanov, О. Rusov, N. Kostomarov, P. Zhitetskyi, F. Vovk, etc.) – “talented, honest, widely educated and people who are selflessly devoted to their land” (S. Rusova). The expedition and the activities of the Department became, according to S. Rusova, one of the "brightest pages in the history of the cultural development of Southern Russia". Their results significantly surpassed the tasks defined by the leadership of the Russian Geographical Society both in terms of the territories covered by the research, and in the volume and quality of the collected materials on Ukrainian ethnography, folklore studies, and anthropology. The Russian Academy of Sciences recognized P. Chubynskyi as the best ethnologist of that time, and the multivolume collection "Proceedings of the Ethnographic and Statistical Expedition to the West Russian Territory" – a world-class scientific work. Ethno-anthropological research within the framework of the Expedition and their processing by the efforts and funds of the South-Western Department of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society is an example of the first systematic scientific research on ethnic anthropology, which covered large territories of Ukraine and some neighboring countries. Thus, we have every reason to associate the scientific and organizational principles of Ukrainian ethnoanthropology with these two scientific institutions – the Ethnographic and Statistical Expedition of 1869-1870 and the Southwestern Department of the Russian Geographical Society
