Abstract
The article examines the contribution of Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytskyi to the development and preservation of the cultural and artistic heritage of the Ukrainian people on the basis of a comprehensive analysis of scientific works. The main areas of Metropolitan Sheptytskyi's financial assistance were: support for educational institutions – from preschool – to higher education institutions; assistance to low-income families and orphans; preservation of artistic heritage and support of talented young artists; monument protection activities The article analyzes the views of the Metropolitan on the implementation of patronage and methods of its implementation. The whole charitable mission of Andrei Sheptytskyi was aimed at obtaining concrete results from his work, which would lead to systemic changes in the cultural development of society. The Metropolitan initiated the introduction of various types of public care for the Ukrainian population. It is proved that Andrei Sheptytskyi helped many public organizations that supported the materially poor. Among them were the Marian societies, which operated at churches and helped the poor and needy; Regional Committee for Assistance to Ukrainian Students, which provided material support to students of secondary and higher education institutions; Society of Holiday Homes – arranged children's rest in suburban complexes, in particular in the village Myluvannia of Tovmatsky district and in Koshiv, Kolomyia County. One of the priority tasks of Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytskyi was high-quality educational training of future priests at the Lviv Theological Seminary. To accomplish this task, the metropolitan often visited an educational institution, held interviews with abbots and theologians, and financially helped talented students to get an education abroad. Trying to raise the prestige of the Greek Catholic Church among the population of Halychyna, Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytskyi organized conferences, retreats, and financed printed publications. An important aspect of Andrei Sheptytskyi's patronage was helping orphans. In 1915, on his initiative, the society «Protection of Metropolitan Sheptytskyi for orphans in Lviv», which took care of their diverse development and self-realization in the future. A separate area of activity of the society was the training of educators and advanced training of teachers for educational institutions funded by the Greek Catholic Church. A separate vector of Metropolitan Sheptytskyi's patronage was the preservation of artistic monuments and the training of artistic intelligentsia. He supported the establishment and promoted the activities of the National Museum in Lviv, financed archeological excavations, and supported talented young artists by providing them with training abroad. Among the scholarship holders of Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytskyi were Oleksa Novakivskyi, Modest Sosenko, Mykhailo Boichuk, Yakiv Strukhmanchuk, Ivan Starchuk, Stanislav Ihnatsii Vitkevych, Mykola Fediuk and others. Well-known philanthropist, public and political figure, Metropolitan of the Greek Catholic Church has made an invaluable contribution to the development of Ukrainian culture. He was a man endowed with extraordinary qualities: humanity, kindness, mercy, determination, respect for others. His moral principles should become a kind of reference point for future generations
