Abstract

The article examines the historiography of the spread of counterfeits in the circulation of money, which brought Napoleon’s troops to Ukrainian lands as part of the Russian Empire. The aim of the article is to analyze the modern scientific achievements on the outlined issues. Coverage of the views of researchers will establish the existing ideas about the goals and objectives set by Napoleon on the campaign to make fake Russian banknotes, the place of printing counterfeits, time and geography of their appearance in the Russian Empire, denominations of such notes, methods to prevent the spread of counterfeits, differences real banknotes, the total amount of such banknotes, as well as to outline the issues that need further study. The study highlights that among modern Ukrainian studies are particularly valuable those that introduce to the scientific achievements of archival materials on the history of money circulation in the territory of Dnieper Ukraine as part of the Russian Empire. During the study, methods of synthesis and analysis, comparison, generalization were used, which led to a number of conclusions, found that there are differences in the views of researchers on the purpose of the French government during the Napoleonic Wars, as some authors consider the task of undermining the economy of the Russian Empire in this way. The scientific achievements of the history of money circulation of researchers A. Alekhov, O. Bayura, A. Bugrov, A. Boyko-Gagarin, A. Denisov, V. Kotsur, L. Muravyova, P. Nikolsky, V. Orlyk, S. Orlyk, I. Ryazantseva, O. Hitalsky, R. Shust, K. Yakovlev and J. Yakovleva are analyzed. The authors call the various centers for production of such notes, as well as the time when counterfeits came to the territory of the Russian Empire. Differences in modern scientific work also differ on the denominations that the French used to print fakes. In general, modern historiography requires further involvement of archival documents on the outlined issues, the study of regional features of the history of circulation of counterfeit notes, which were made by the French during the Napoleonic Wars
